Celebrating World Rivers Day  and the magic of light and life on the Ōpāwaho-Heathcote River & tributaries, capturing the river in all its moods and contexts over 48 hours.

Great Prizes to be won!

We are looking for photos that reflect the three themes of the competition:

- People and the river - 

- The river’s flora and fauna - 

 - The river and her moods - 

Open to anyone who is interested, and has an eye for creating great photos. Submissions from both amateur and professional photographers are welcomed.

Photo guidelines

We’re looking for quality photos that we can use to illustrate the varied nature of the Ōpāwaho-Heathcote River from the headwaters to its mouth. 

Here are a few things to consider.

  • Photos need to be at least 8-10MB, so check the settings on your phone or camera

  • Must be free of any borders, watermarks or signatures 

  • Can be either portrait or landscape

  • If people are recognisable in the photos you will need signed permission from them.

  • Taken over the weekend 21st - 22nd September 2019

  • See below for entering via Instagram – finalists will be contacted and asked to submit a photo of greater file size and complete the relevant forms.

How to Enter

Once you’ve taken your images choose your best 1, 2 or 3 (i.e. to cover all three categories or multiple entries in one category) and submit using the official entry form.

You can find
permission form online here, if you have photos containing recognisable people.

Please label your photo – Category letter - Surname & Initial (e.g. A-SmithJ)

Instagram entry

Photo submission is also open through our Instagram account (@opawahoheathcote).
If submitting via Instagram, please follow these instructions. 

  1. Follow OpwahoHeathcote Instagram account: @opawahoheathcote 

  2. Must include title and location of photo in caption

  3. Make sure your photo follows the general guidelines of our Photo Competition 2019 (see above)

  4. Maximum submission is 3 photos per account. More than 3 entries submitted will not be accepted.

  5. Must include hashtag #OpawahoPhotoComp2019 in caption

  6. Must include a hashtag indicating the theme that the photo represents (i.e. #peopleandtheriver #floraandfauna #riverandhermoods)

  7. If your photo is selected for the finals you will be messaged and asked to complete the necessary entry and permission forms


How we’ll use your photos

Images are a great way to tell the story of our river; selected images will be used to promote the OHRN across social media, in presentations, for fundraising and on our website. We will always acknowledge the photographer each time we use your photo.


This will take place during the week following the competition day. Images selected by judges to go forward for the final judging will be part of the exhibition following. Finalists will be notified by phone and email, or messaged via Instagram.


1. Competition period: 12.01am Saturday 21st – -11.59pm Sunday 22nd September 2019 

2. Deadline for uploading entries: midnight Thursday 26th September 2019

3. First judging round: Saturday 29th September, 10 finalists in each theme contacted by October 20th.

4. Finalists’ photos displayed at South Library 20th October - 1 November 2019.

5. Finalist judging: during the period of display with an opportunity for selection of a ‘People’s Choice’ Award.

6. Announcement of winners & award ceremony: Friday 1st November 2019 [details to be sent to the finalists]

The Terms and Conditions of photo(s) submission 

By using, accessing or submitting a photo/s, you acknowledge that you have read, understood and agree to be bound by all sections of this agreement. Before you make a submission, please read the terms and conditions. If you do not accept and agree to all of the agreement terms and conditions, do not submit photos.

These Terms and Conditions are entered into by and between Ōpāwaho-Heathcote River Network (OHRN) and you. This agreement becomes effective when you submit an image through the email link on the dedicated webpage, or by providing, in any manner, an image to OHRN. This Agreement is between OHRN and you. This Agreement sets forth the terms and conditions under which you agree to submit a photo.

  1. Entries can be submitted until midnight on Thursday 26th September 2019. No entries will be accepted after this deadline.

  2. Submission is free and open to all persons who acknowledge acceptance of this Agreement.

  3. All entries must be submitted via email to

  4. The entrant’s details must be submitted via the official entry form (see above for Instagram instructions}

  5. Photographs must have been taken over the weekend 21-22 September 2019.

  6. Each person can submit up to three photographic entries.

  7. Photos must be submitted as JPEG files. Minimum file size 1MB; maximum of 10MB. 

  8. If the organisers are unable to open or upload the entries submitted because of technical errors caused by file quality or if the file is damaged, the organiser reserves the right not to include the entries in the competition. No correspondence will be entered into with the entrant.

  9. All entries must represent one of the three categories as authentically as possible and must be free from excessive digital manipulation. Images that are obviously heavily digitally altered will not be accepted as entries to the competition.

  10. The organisers reserve the right to not display entries that have been deemed inappropriate or not meeting the description for the categories.

  11. Entrants agree to be contacted by the organisers regarding this competition.

  12. No correspondence will be entered into if an entry is not selected for display.

  13. The finalist judging panel will be convened by the committee of the Ōpāwaho-Heathcote River Network and will consist of four people not associated with the OHRN committee. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

  14. Hard copy photographs submitted will not be returned.

  15. All entries will be treated with care, but no responsibility will be accepted in the case of loss or damage.

  16. The entrant’s consent to these Terms and Conditions by emailing the images to the competition address.

  17. By uploading the image, the entrant asserts that they are the copyright holder and grants permission to OHRN to reproduce, either through print or electronically, their entry for display or use in marketing, promotion or any other non-commercial activity.

  18. The entrant must be the original author of the work entered as described in the Copyright Act 1994. Any attempt at plagiarism will result in immediate disqualification.

  19. The organisers acknowledge the moral rights provisions of the Copyright Act 1994, including the right to be identified as the author of the work and the right to object to derogatory treatment of the work. To preserve the artistic integrity of the entry, no work will be intentionally edited, altered, demeaned or misrepresented in any way.

  20. It is the entrant’s responsibility to obtain appropriate written permission from people or owners of property that are identifiable in their work. The entrant must submit a permission form to the organisers with photographs in which people or properties are readily identifiable.

  21. The entrant fully indemnifies the organisers against any claims arising from the display or use of unaltered work as described herein and from the infringement of intellectual property rights of any third party.

  22. Prizes are non-transferable and are not redeemable for cash.
