OHRN Update: a year in review

The last year has been busy for the Opawaho Heathcote River Network as we worked to further our vision of an '...ecologically healthy river that people take pride in, enjoy and care for.' We have

Made a submission to the CCC Consent Application to discharge water and other contaminants (CRC160056) (February 2016).

Celebrated our first anniversary with the launch of the OHRN charter (June 2016)

Made a joint deputation along with the Avon Heathcote Ihutai Estuary Trust and the Avon Otakaro Network to the CCC Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee regarding the installation of river booms to collect rubbish. (September 2016)

Participated in many community events including:

  1. Estuary Festival (March 2016)
  2. Mother of All Clean-ups (May 2016)
  3. Whaka Inaka Project (Summer/Autumn 2016)
  4. World Fish Migration Day (May 2016)
  5. Seven Rivers, Seven Weeks Walks (March 2017)

We have also given presentations to  'Walk and Talk' community groups, the Department of Conservation, residents associations and community networking meetings.

Our Facebook page continues to be a great success and now has 631 likes. The most viewed post was the Maori history of the name Opawaho, which attracted 2750 views. The ‘voice’ behind the Facebook page is Karen Whitla. If you want to see regular posts about the Opāwaho-Heathcote river, please 'like' our page, and share it with your friends.

There's lots to do over the next twelve months.... we're keeping an eye on the effect of the Port Hills fires, and we hope to launch our new logo soon!
